DLC

The DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating on the knife blade is a thin, highly durable layer of carbon with a structure similar to that of diamond. It is created using PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) technology, whereby carbon particles are applied to a metal substrate in a vacuum at elevated temperatures. The result is a surface with a hardness often exceeding 2000 HV, which is several times higher than that of hardened stainless steel. A blade treated in this way gains exceptional wear resistance, a reduced friction coefficient, and better glide when cutting.

Thanks to the coating, the steel wears less because the contact friction between the blade and the material is reduced by up to half. In addition, the surface is hydrophobic, so there is less sticking when cutting meat, vegetables, or foods with a high starch content. For technical knives or surgical instruments, DLC treatment also provides biocompatibility and chemical inertness, which reduces the risk of corrosion when in contact with acids or body fluids.

The layer is extremely thin—usually 1–3 micrometers—and therefore does not affect the sharpness of the cutting edge. Nevertheless, it ensures a longer knife life and slows down the need for sharpening. The surface takes on a black to graphite appearance, which adds aesthetic value in addition to its functional aspects.

The significance of DLC coating on knives lies in extending their service life, reducing performance loss during repeated use, and improving user comfort. For professional chef's knives, outdoor blades, or precision technical tools, this technology is becoming an essential element that connects modern materials engineering with traditional everyday tools.
