Hungary's location on the world map makes it a country that lies between the cultural influences of East and West. This influence is, of course, directly reflected in Hungarian weapons. The Hungarian sabre is primarily a cutting weapon used mainly from horseback, but its user could also use it successfully when dismounted. The blade of this sabre is made of high carbon 1055 steel with hard spring hardening. It has an axe-shaped tip, making it wider at the tip or point than at the guard. The guard of the saber has a very wide sturdy lip. The wider pens provide more protection for the hand and forearm. Also, because of their greater width, a skilled swordsman can intercept a strike aimed at the hand, wrist or forearm with just a small twist of the wrist, as the long staves cover a lot of ground and minimal movement by the defender is all that is needed to block the path of the incoming blade. The leather sheath is, in a word, beautiful. Its fittings are attractively arranged and create a light, bright contrast to the black leather base.
