The design of the Spartan-Harsey Nessmuk is based on the classic American design made famous by George Washington Sears (1821-1890) and the more moderate ergonomic contemporary designs of William W. Harvey Jr.
Under the tutelage of a Narragansett Indian named Nessmuk, George Washington Sears learned about the natural world, and his mentor taught him the skills he would need to survive in it. Years later, when Sears began to write about this world, he took his teacher's name, which meant "forest dragon," as well as "all my love of forest life" in the header. Under the pseudonym "Nessmuk," he wrote many letters to Forest and Steam magazine in the 1880s.
Nessmuk preferred thin knives with a very sharp blade and a practical length.
The maker of Spartan Blades is confident that its latest version of the Nessmuk knife will be one that would make George Washington Sears proud.
