Helle's limited edition 2023 knife is a celebration of one of Helle's favorite animals: Reindeer (Rein) in Norwegian. Reindeer have been one of the most important animals in the Norwegian fauna for thousands of years, supplying the inhabitants of the Nordic countries with meat for protein, fur for warmth, and - most importantly to Helle - antlers for crafting.
The reindeer's antlers are a prized crafting material for several reasons. First, they offer a natural supply of hard yet workable natural material. Second, the natural variation in pattern and color makes them aesthetically appealing. Thirdly, Scandinavian reindeer antlers are a sustainable and renewable source of handle material.
But there is a more sinister reason why we are highlighting reindeer this year - the ongoing plight of wildlife around the world. Even well-managed wild and semi-domesticated reindeer herds are currently under pressure. The main threat, as in many other parts of the world, is human intervention. Our limited edition 2023 knife is therefore dedicated to raising awareness of the precariousness of our ecosystems in general and reindeer in particular.
The Rein knife is of course made with the reindeer in mind. They are large, affectionate animals that are ideally suited for life in the north. The colors of the knife reflect the colors of the reindeer - earth tones broken up by variations of white.
The knife features a 9 cm highly polished blade with a scandi grind made from our H3LS laminated steel. The composite handle has a dimensional belly made up of equal parts leather and reindeer antler inputs, framed by a front and back of dark oak. The shape is reminiscent of a classic Norwegian outdoor knife, ideal for most things you need a knife for when you're either going on a Sunday hike or a longer adventure.
The knife comes in a genuine vegetable tanned brown leather sheath and features a reindeer print on the front.

A Helle knife goes through up to 45 stages of manual operations before finally being inspected and packaged.
