"After spending decades in the jungles of Asia, Africa, North America and other remote places, I always wanted something between a machete and a durable survival knife," says DPx Gear founder Robert Young Pelton. "The CHOP is a 30-centimeter piece of sharp [Niolox] steel that can handle camp building, cooking and self-defense."
The key to the CHOP's unique patented knife design is not only the use of the same exotic steel used in the commercial meat industry, but also ergonomics. The shape of the knife is unique. A deeply ergonomic handle with a rounded full tang transitions into a front heavy axe-like tip. There is also 30cm of perfectly straight, sword-sharpened Niolox steel for performing precision work, a flat, strong spine for pounding, an embossed area to balance the knife and a 5cm tip with a thicker cut for chopping wood and a strong point for field work. There are also two clever recesses on the front and back of the spine for piercing wood.
The overall look is reminiscent of Asian parangs; designs that Pelton used for years on expeditions around the island of Borneo. The coarse but flexible automotive spring blades required the addition of a heavy brushcutter and a small wood splitting axe, doubling the weight of the actual equipment.
The DPx Gear CHOP 12 is the perfect middle ground between axe, machete and heavy brushcutter. When paired with a lightweight, durable skinning knife like the DPx HEST Original, it becomes the perfect outdoor combination.
"This groundbreaking blade has been shaped, modified and tuned for the hard work that extreme environments require," notes Pelton, who spends long periods of time using and testing his prototypes in tough places like Somalia, Afghanistan, Burma, South Sudan and other areas where he works as a war journalist, researcher and author. "The CHOP is a spare survival knife that can be used to cut down a 12-inch tree or even for delicate tasks such as shaving."
The DPx HEFT 12 CHOP Milspec knife is made in Italy by LionSTEEL and features an uncoated Niolox blade, black G10 blades.
