Detailed information

Product detailed description

The Opinel vegetable-derived maintenance oil is used to lubricate the blades and swivel locks of knives and at the same time to treat the wooden handles and cutting boards. This natural oil protects metal parts from corrosion and wood from drying out and cracking. Application is quick and easy. A clean and dry knife is first wiped with a soft cloth to remove all dirt and moisture. A few drops of oil are then dripped onto the cloth to evenly coat the blade and metal part of the safety.

When lubricating the blade, it is important to be careful and apply a thin film of oil, which will dry after a short time and form a protective layer without unnecessary leakage into the mechanism. The wood handle is treated in the same way - a few drops of oil are massaged into the surface in a steady circular motion. The natural composition of the oil allows deep penetration into the structure of the wood, thus increasing its resistance to moisture and prolonging its life.

For optimum results, maintenance should be carried out regularly, ideally every few weeks when the tool is used intensively. The oil is packaged in a handy can with a capacity of around 150 millilitres, which is sufficient for the long-term care of several tools. When applied correctly, the wood will retain its natural appearance, fine texture and pleasant tactile response, while the blade will remain smooth and protected against oxidation.

opinel_logo_1

The first Opinel knife was made by Joseph Opinel in his father's workshop in the small village of Albiez-Le-Vieux near Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in France. From 1896 onwards, with three employees, he produced around 60 pieces a day. By 1901, the original workshop was no longer sufficient, so Opinel built a new one, employing fifteen workers. Eight years later, Opinel registered a trademark with the company's logo: the hand with the crown (main couronnée), which has marked all knife blades ever since. The knives were first sold by travelling salesmen, and later Opinel itself began exporting its production to Belgium and Italy. In 1911, one of his knives won a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Turin.

In 1920, production expanded to a newly built factory in Cognin near Chambéry. By the beginning of the Second World War, the company had sold 20 million knives. The company is still owned today by the founder's family. There is also a museum (Le Musée de l'Opinel) in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. The company employs around 100 people at its plants in Cognin and Chambéry and produces between four and five million knives a year.
