Manufacturer's instructions and advice on the use of SHAPTON grinding stones:

Do Shapton stones need to be soaked in water before use?
No, Shapton stones do not need to be soaked except for the first use after purchase. However, for first use, we recommend soaking the stone in water for five to six minutes beforehand to ensure an even smoother grind.

What are the characteristics of Shapton stones?
Features of Shapton stones include "High abrasiveness and grindability", "Ready to use" , "Reduced wear", "Long life" and "Odourless".

Which face of KUROMAKU grinding stones should I use?
You can use either side, but we recommend starting on the side where no letters are printed.

What are the grinding stones made of?
Grinding stones are made from abrasive materials such as aluminum oxide and silicon carbide, combined with binders and other compound materials.

Why do I still see scratches on the blade even though I have ground it with a fine KUROMAKU stone?
If you polish it with a fine stone after sharpening it with a medium stone, but there is still suspension on the blade or on your hands, the blade may have been scratched by the coarse abrasive of the medium stone. For this reason, it is important to wash off any dirt from the previous step when changing the grinding stone and moving to progressively finer grinding grades. It is not enough to rinse the blade and your hands: you should carefully and thoroughly wash off all layers of dirt on your hands, nails and the surface of the blade.

Is it okay to use oils with abrasive stones?
Yes, it is okay to use oil with abrasive stones. However, once you use oil on a stone, you should always use oil with that stone.

Do I have to keep the water running all the time when I am sharpening the blade?
There is no need to keep the water running continuously - you can sharpen the blades by simply splashing water on the surface of the stone. However, if you let the water run continuously, it means that your hands will stay clean when you are sharpening.

Are any of the KUROMAKU sharpening stones recommended for common household knives?
We recommend the Orange Medium (1000) and the Wine Fine (5000). If you are only going to use one stone, we recommend the Blue Medium (1500).
