The blowgun has a long history, it could be found in almost every part of the globe. Some believe it was first invented in Malaysia, and then spread through the Malaysian and Indonesian archipelagos to both the Philippines and as far north as Japan. However, the blowgun was not only a southeastern weapon, but was also found in the Western Hemisphere in the jungles of South and Central America, and occasionally further north, in the southeastern United States.

The blowgun was originally invented as a hunting weapon. It was used to hunt small animals and birds, small stones or hardened clay were used as ammunition. Eventually, most hunters found that they could hunt much larger animals using a thin wooden arrow that was infused with deadly poison. The poison was made from the sap of the vine.
