Handle

The knife handle is the part that connects the user to the blade and determines how the tool is controlled. It is usually a two-piece construction attached to the blade tang by riveting, screws, or gluing. Its shape, material, and finish fundamentally affect the ergonomics, safety, and durability of the entire knife.

Manufacturers use a wide range of materials. Traditional woods, such as walnut, olive, or beech, provide a pleasant warm feel and are easy to work with, but require regular maintenance because they react to moisture. Modern composites, such as micarta, G10, or carbon fiber laminate, offer high strength, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance. Metal handles made of titanium or aluminum alloys offer mechanical robustness and low weight, while rubber and thermoplastic materials provide slip resistance and shock absorption.

The shape of the handles is subject to both aesthetic and functional criteria. Ergonomic cutouts and curves respect the anatomy of the palm, allowing for a firm grip even during prolonged use. Non-slip textures, roughening, or grooves contribute to increased safety, especially in wet environments. The weight of the handles ranges from a few grams for minimalist folding knives to tens of grams for robust outdoor models, which significantly affects the center of gravity of the tool.

The handle also protects the inner part of the knife – the blade tang. The connecting elements must withstand high mechanical stress, for example when cutting hard materials or splitting wood.
