Many useful tools have come from the Japanese over the years. The nata (which roughly translates to axe in this context) is one that hasn't received as much attention as the katana or EDC tools or kiridashi. It was used primarily as a gardening tool, to prune or remove branches from trees, to clear brush, and to perform tasks that one would expect from a knife before the advent of power tools or modern tools. However, the Nata's simplistic design perfectly complements its functionality.
The Nata version from TOPS combines traditional Japanese style with American ruggedness. The wide rectangular blade retains mass for the entire length of the blade, making it cut better than most knives of this size. The angled handle also enhances chopping power. The TOPS version has a standard flat cut on both sides of the blade instead of the chisel or single-sided style that many Japanese tools have. It is also a full tang knife, like all TOPS fixed blade knives. The thick, well-shaped handles provide a comfortable grip, and the single sheath with raised front makes it easy to carry and use at home, on the ranch, at the campsite, or anywhere else.
