Product detailed description

From the late 1830s until shortly after the American Civil War, the Arkansas Toothpick knife was the main competitor to the legendary Bowie knife. It got its name as an ironic reference to the rough and tumble culture that shaped the Arkansas lowlands and Mississippi Delta in the mid-19th century. European travelers and journalists at the time liked to spread colorful stories about how local men allegedly used huge knives to clean their teeth—and that's where the name "Arkansas Toothpick" comes from.

Like Bowie knives, they were often large, almost always with a double-edged blade and a sharp, distinctive tip. A typical feature was a double guard, and many pieces were richly decorated, with some directly imitating the appearance and dimensions of Bowie knives of the time. Although simpler versions also existed, most of these knives were distinctive and decorative, which emphasized their prestige and unique character.

Cold Steel's modern take on this historical legend features a massive double-edged spear-shaped blade, a Malaysian sal wood handle, and a decorative alligator-themed pommel that gives the knife its unmistakable look. Equally impressive is the precisely crafted sheath, delicately decorated to perfectly match the handle and emphasize the overall impression of an exceptional and representative piece.
